PC Mobile Softphone Convergence
Convergence is defined as providing the ability to access voice and data services seamlessly over any network or device while being tied into one ‘single’ identity. Service providers have a tremendous opportunity to capture the convergence opportunity as users continue to become more mobile, devices become more powerful, and broadband networks become more ubiquitous. Service providers have an immediate opportunity to deliver converged voice and messaging services that enable a ‘One Number’ service (voice, SMS, etc.) to PCs (laptops and desktops) using their primary mobile identity. In addition, service providers have the option of leveraging growing deployments of broadband networks to the home. Tatara Systems calls this ‘PC Mobile Softphone Convergence’.
 
The Tatara solution enables an end-user to make and receive voice calls and send SMS through a softphone on a laptop or desktop, over any IP network, including Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or 3G using their mobile phone number. How is this different from a generic VoIP service from Skype or Google? The key difference is in the ability to tie a softphone service to a mobile number. The user does not have an additional VoIP identity or phone number. People can still call the user’s mobile number and, when the user chooses to do so, the call can be received on the laptop over a softphone. This means that the user just publishes his mobile phone number as his contact information.
